Sunday Concert Pictures
Rain showers Sunday morning tipped the decision as to whether to hold the Sunday concert outdoors in the Gaelic College’s beautiful natural amphitheatre or inside in the Hall of the Clans to the latter, a decision that proved well founded as the afternoon’s generally sunny weather was broken by occasional passing showers. Emceed by Wendy Bergfeldt, hostess of CBC Radio’s Island Echoes and Mainstreet Cape Breton, and by Bob MacEachern, owner and General Manager of radio station 101.5 The Hawk (CIGO) in Port Hawkesbury, the Grand Concert began at 14h in the Gaelic College’s Hall of the Clans.
During the initial part of the concert, I had a seat in the first row with an unencumbered view of the stage. As more people arrived, filling all of the seats set up at the start of the concert, additional chairs were added, two rows of which were directly in front of where I was sitting. Very coöperative folks in the second row arranged themselves so that I usually had a very good view of the stage, but a number of photos taken thereafter include members of the audience in the first row that I could not avoid.
For much of the afternoon, I was able to avoid the use of the flash as the lighting in the hall was sufficient. Later in the afternoon as it was preparing to set, the fickle sun appeared in a blaze of glory through the windows at the top of the Hall of the Clans, producing lighting contrasts on the stage I was nearly completely unable to deal with; the resulting photos, a combination of too dark portions and washed-out portions, have been omitted. I reverted to flash towards the end of the concert, which concluded at 19h22.
I am not a professional photographer, so take the photos for what they are: my best attempt to capture what was going on at a live event. Inevitably, microphones get in the road and the angle from which I was shooting means that those standing in the back may be obscured by those standing in the front. Given the conditions that prevailed, from which I have learnt some additional lessons, a surprising number of the photos turned out better than I had expected and I hope you will enjoy them.
