This photo provides a closer view of the eel grass island, the transitional meadow, and the sand dunes, beyond which lies the Northumberland Strait. The brown-coloured water attests to the shallowness of this part of the river, which plays a vital rôle in maintaining the health of this ecosystem. A number of birds, likely blue herons, are at the base of the bush on the sand dunes in the centre of the photo and at least two others are on the edge of the eel-grass island.
