The Old Ferry Road Trail ends at the Whale Cove coast in roughly the middle of this photo behind the eel grass island. The switch from forested land to sand dunes is fairly abrupt, with only a small meadow in between; the sand dunes continue past the right end of the photo back to the breakwater on the Mabou River.
Whale Cove is for the most part pretty shallow, consisting of tidal flats that are feeding grounds for many shore birds. The eel grass island in the middle of the photo is a popular place for shore birds and, as seen in the previous photo, herons often stand on its periphery.
